ahhh. it’s late and i shouldn’t be on instagram. on here it feels like everyone is happier and everyone is doing it better. everyone has the perfect dish, the perfect caption, the perfect idea, the perfect photo, the perfect everything.

in weak moments and in not-so-weak moments i see other success and i covet it.

i gotta check myself. everyone is trying. we all want to present our best self. you deserve to achieve. your success doesn’t mean my failure (say that on repeat until it sticks, alex.)

i want to see your success. i hope you know it’s okay to not always be successful. i hope you know it’s okay to share all your successes. (i really do want to see them).

the next thing i make doesn’t have to be better than the last thing i made. that’s my truth. i just have to keep making as long as i want to keep making.

hey friends in healthcare. i hear your already incredibly stressful job is even more difficult right now. i hate that for you and i hope you are doing okay.

we’d like to make you some food. from now through at least the end of january stop by for a free bowl of soup with toast and a treat. right now we’ve got chicken noodle and vegan tomato. soup is good for the soul and y’all have some pretty great souls.

a very small thanks for everything you do for our community.

friends and family of healthcare workers are welcome to pick up as long as y’all promise it’s going to someone in healthcare.

love you and hope to see you soon.

here at the restaurant and not at the hospital or anything hopefully . . .

it’s cold and dark this time of year. lots of folks are home quarantining. to warm up things a bit we are introducing our “stay home & feel better” package dinners.

great to drop off for a friend or to take home for your family.

2 x quarts chicken noodle soup
4 x brownies
milk bread
satsuma oranges
2 x orange juice
2 x buchi kombucha (fire or seed)
tissues

feeds 4 with comfort. we can add a bottle of wine or a six pack of beer.

$45

we will be adding a couple more packages over the next week. vegan and vegetarian options coming soon as well.

keep staying safe and keep being awesome.

he told me he missed going to whole foods with me “remember the good old days? when we would go places together. . .”

why are you seven and asking about good old days. all your days should be good. 2020 . . . making kids nostalgic.

“we make it to may 1st. then we are golden”

making it is getting old. is it ever just fucking made? i can make it all my fault. i can make it all someone else’s. i’m just not sure how to make it.

“don’t try and have a serious conversation if you are tired or angry.”

that’s fair. i can be quiet forever probably.

“ipa’s you have with you always. why don’t you try something seasonal.”

confronted with so many choices what can you do but default to what you know. risk aversion. would it were that anything i did only affected me. oh the places i would go. “you and i have both worked really hard to get you out of this hole.”

don’t i know it.

“you can do all the things right and there will still be people who you can’t make like you.”

“how do you deal with them not liking you?”

“who?”

so we would sit at the bar. surreal in a way. it’s the middle of a grocery store but it feels like he and i are the only people alive. i make him order his own food. “can i have a slice cheese pizza with black olives please.” the cook has to find the aisle and get a can from the store just for this order. he does it with joy though. he even cuts the slice of pizza up into bites. “the service here is so great, don’t you think bud?”

“and for you sir?”

he’s smiling as he asks. he already knows.

“i’ll have a burger—medium rare— with cajun spice, blue cheese, bacon, lettuce, and sriracha mayo.”

“the usual. of course.”

i watch him make the burger for me. he always makes it so well. i turn to e and ask “so what do you want to talk about?”

pictured here: the one i used to get at whole foods.
